There are reports of a call bell going off on the second floor when no one is in the room, even after it was unplugged.

The Reservoir (Alice Lake)

When you go out to the reservoir after the gates are locked, you can feel cold spots and see orbs on the pier. People have also said that when they're fishing that they hear a little girl screaming for her help as she falls into the water.

The Old Rialto Theater

This movie theater located on Main Street closed in the 1980s. Former employees and an occasional patron claimed to have seen shadowy figures in the upper hallways and to have experienced feelings of dread. Feelings of being watched from the upper levels were a common experience.

Wal-Mart

There is said to be a ghost who roams the aisles of Wal-Mart who plays practical jokes on the associates. There is also a spirit who has caused major problems in the store by making accidents happen and causing damage to the merchandise and equipment at the store. The associates have nicknamed the practical joker Matilda. On the other hand, the problem causing spirit has never been named because the associates prefer no contact with that spirit. The Wal-Mart is built on an old homestead site of the original Collins Family who founded Alice. The Old Collins Cemetery is adjacent to the Wal-Mart.

William Adams Junior High

A young teenaged girl is said to roam the place looking for her love, who is said to have killed her.

U.S. Highway 281

The image of a woman in black has been seen by motorists in the area where she was murdered. She is most often seen at the Farm Road 141 Underpass, south of Alice.

The ghost of a lady in black haunts a section of this modern highway. She is Leonora Rodriquez, wife of Don Ramos, who lived in a hacienda in Falfurrias in the 1700s. At the time the area was a flat chaparral cut by a single dirt road. Leonora was hanged from a large oak along that road, by her husband's vaqueros. Don Paul had accused the woman of becoming pregnant by another man. Now her spirit haunts the place where she died. Her ghost is seen along the road wearing the same black dress she wore the night that she was murdered. Numerous motorists have pulled off the road to help the forlorn phantom, only to see her vanish.

Leonora Rodriguez was hanged at this site by her husband's hired hands after she was accused of adultery. To this day motorists stop to help this sad lady in black.

Alton (Hidalgo County)

Caliche Pit

In September 1989, a school bus fell over the ledge of a caliche pit full of water. Twenty-one children drowned that day while struggling to get out of the bus. Now it is fenced in. People have claimed to hear the screams of the children, though some of the locals figure it is the teens that hang around there. Some people even claim to have seen figures sitting on the ledge of the pit. Park and get off to see everything up close. There is a definite sense of sorrow and gloom surrounding the area.

Two news accounts of the tragedy:

The community of Alton, TX, remains stunned following yesterday's school-bus accident that killed 19 youngsters. Authorities said the crowded bus plunged more than 40 feet into a water-filled gravel pit when it was hit by a delivery truck. Investigators quoted the truck driver as saying his brake failed. Sixty-five people were sent to hospitals. At least one student is believed missing.

[In] 1989 [there was an] accident in the Rio Grande Valley town of Alton that killed 21 Mission junior high and high school students. The teenagers drowned after their school bus was hit and went off the road, landing in an abandoned quarry 20 feet from the roadside. At the bottom of the unfenced 40-foot-deep chasm was 12 feet of water.

Aransas Pass (Aransas County)

Highland Avenue

We have a haunted road called Highland Avenue. I was told that if you drive down it at 3:00 AM, you'll see apparitions walking down the road. I was also told never to stop and get out because something bad will happen to you. I've driven down it before and never saw anything except orb-like lights.

Bandera (Bandera County)

Bandera Pass

According to a book in the Kerrville Library, Bandera Pass is one of the most haunted places in Kerr County. Bandera Pass a line of hills that separate Kerr County and Bandera County. Bandera Pass has its own ghost lights that nobody can explain, like those of Marfa and Anson. The lights are believed to be spirits that are protecting a lost treasure that settlers hid from Indians back in the 1800s. Bandera Pass also has a headless horseman who rides from Bandera, Texas to Center Point, Texas. He is said to be the ghost of a mail carrier who got his head cut off by Apache Indians, and his fate is to ride for eternity looking for his head. Bandera Pass also has a ghost wagon of settlers that were murdered by Apache Indians. These settlers now ride on certain nights and cut through local ranchers' pastures. People have reported seeing all of these three things in the surrounding area.

Camp Lulu

Camp Lulu was a camp for young kids until it was closed down after a counselor went crazy and raped and killed the girls. Now if you go at night you can hear the crying of the girls. But if you are caught trespassing, the owner of the property (who tries to preserve the souls of the young girls) might shoot you.

Farm Road 511

Farm Road 511 is a fairly well traveled road, but it has been reported in the local newspaper and other media that late at night people have encountered what are known as ghost cows in this stretch of road. As you drive down the road you may suddenly see a cow six feet in front of you and try to avoid it only to find out that your evasive action was unnecessary, since there was never really anything there. We have had some people get into serious accidents, causing great damage to their vehicles and person, only to get out of their vehicles and find no sign of any animal or living creature in sight.

Paredes Line Road

A sheriff was once killed in an accident with a drunk driver. At night if you pass the red light without stopping he will put the siren and stop you. He will just give you a warning and tell you to be careful and not drive too fast.

Simon Rivera High School

A girl is said to have been murdered in the shower stalls of the girls' locker room. During late practices, students sometimes hear the showers go off and see what looks like liquid pouring down the drain. They can hear a blood-curdling scream that makes them run out in a heartbeat. And even the volleyball coach said that when he was painting the raider logo on the wall, he heard a scream and noises that sounded as if someone was being banged against the lockers.

Showers will begin running by themselves. In last stall, the toilet flushes by itself numerous times. When you're alone in the locker room, the slamming of lockers can sometimes be heard.

There is said to be the ghost of a teenager who died while playing basketball roaming the gym. If you are alone in the gym you can hear a basketball hitting the ground. The janitors are said to have seen and heard the ghost.

Stanolin Road

When you're driving down this road, it starts to curve. A man was driving too fast and his car crashed. Now in the spot where they put the cross memorializing his death, you can see him standing there grinning, and he will start to walk to your car. But when he gets to the window, you'll know he's a ghost, so start driving.

University of Texas

The school was known as Fort Brown during and after the Civil War. It was occupied by both Union and Confederate troops. Soldiers, horses, cavalry officers, etc., haunt it. The buildings that house the university are historical monuments. Sightings and sounds have been experienced in almost every building on campus.

The university's reputation for paranormal activity stems from the school's location. The university land was once part of old Fort Brown, an army outpost that dates back to the Mexican-American War. Sounds of soldiers parading across school grounds, books and doors moving in the library, encounters with nurses and mothers looking for their children at the old hospital, and a regiment saluting the flag have been reported to school officials as ghosts.

Old Morgue: This is used as a storage building and a three room accounting office. There are strange noises in the building, which cannot be identified. There are reports of the apparitions of a woman and small child appearing, books falling from shelves, chairs moving in the library, voices, and doors opening and closing. A lady dressed in black has been seen sitting on a wall in front of the old morgue. Also, electrical devices in the building will suddenly stop working or break for a while. Later they will start working again. Plugs will also pull out of sockets by themselves and items will move themselves. These incidents are supposed to be caused by the ghosts of soldiers whose bodies were stored here. A picture was taken in May of 2001 of what appears to be a hanged body.

Channel 23

Apparitions show themselves to the janitors after hours.

Dimmit County Courthouse

An old sheriff has been heard walking the floors and rattling keys.

Late at night you can hear footsteps walking up the stairs to the second floor and the rattling of keys. The footsteps are those of the old sheriff who was slain at his residence by two men.

Late at night, the sound of footsteps and keys rattling can be heard on the stairs leading to the second floor. Some think this is the spirit of a murdered sheriff.

I live in Carrizo Springs, which is located in Dimmit County. You have a bit about our courthouse and the sounds of the keys of the murdered sheriff Doc Murray. This is all true. I worked as a dispatcher on the late shift and I did hear the footsteps and keys. It is also rumored that, as Doc Murray did when he was alive, he still shows up at the jailhouse and prepares the dinner meal for the prisoners. You can smell the food cooking, dishes rattle, and steps upstairs too the cells. Many inmates and guards have actually seen Sheriff Murray. He is still dedicated to his job.

Blackbeard's on the Beach

Despite what is printed on the menu, Colonel Platt maintains that he demolished the original building in 1962. Moving chairs, roving cold spots and jumping saltshakers could be caused by one of two people. The ghost could be that of a man who was killed in a fight over a woman, or that of a man who committed suicide nearby after losing his wife.

Fort Lipantitlan

A lady in green is reported, who might be Señora Garcia, wife of Marcelino Garcia. She died when the Texians took the fort.

This old Mexican fort was home to a living apparition known as the Lady in Green. As Marcelino Garcia lay dying from wounds suffered when Texans captured the fort, the ghost of his wife appeared near his bed for several days in a row. Dozens witnessed the strange phenomenon, yet the woman was still alive in Mexico City. A friend's letter had informed her of her husband's plight, and somehow her spirit managed to be at his side. Even after he died, the Lady in Green continued to walk through the door and over to his former bed. For twenty five years, the uncanny image appeared at Fort Lipantitlan, and only stopped in 1810, on the day the woman died.

Headless Horseman Hill

A beheaded horse thief appears occasionally.

USS Lexington

This battleship is now a museum. Workers have reported hearing the sounds of chains being dragged across the deck when no one was present.

The ghost of this battleship is polite, knowledgeable and kind. Smartly dressed in a summer white navy uniform, he's good looking, too, with light hair, a clear complexion and piercing blue eyes that haunt like a good ghost story. He is an apparition to write home about. Those who have seen him say he might be found in the engine room of the Lexington Museum, although none of the museum staff has seen those blue eyes for themselves. He wears no nametag, but is known solely by description.

It has been said that in the boiler room of the ship there is a spirit of a young man in a sailor outfit who will tell you where things are located.

A handsome blonde haired, blue-eyed man in a white navy suit haunts the ship. He is said to be very helpful to patrons, and his image has been seen by many on the ghost cam!

Heritage Park Museum

There are four houses that are haunted. In one (the Sidbury House) a child supposedly haunts the children's room by playing with the dolls and moving stuff and knocking things down. In another (the Galvan House) a ghost is said to tap people on the shoulder. On the second floor someone once heard footsteps leading up to the attic. In another house (a restaurant named The Christian House Bistro) there have been reports that a lady with a long old fashioned dress and a big hat and shoes is seen walking into the front door and disappearing. People have only seen the backside of her. Then in another house (the MacCambell House) a ghost named Mary, who died of pneumonia, is said to not let tour guides in the house and to cause noises. Also if you go on the patio on the second floor she has locked tour guides out on the porch by slamming the door shut then locking it so all you have to hope for if you get locked out is that you can wave somebody down and they'll come help you.

The Old Courthouse

It has been scientifically proven that many people have been hanged and sentenced to death there. The rumor is that a young boy went to the courthouse on the night of Halloween in the early 1900s. He did not believe in ghosts until this incident. He went up to the 10th floor where all the death sentences went through. He walked over to a window to look at a rope that had what looked like blood on it, and some force threw him over the edge of the window. Specialists found blood from the rope on the windowsill where he tried to hold on. He hit the cement face first.

Wilson Tower

The Wilson Plaza historical development started in 1927. In 1951, Mr. Wilson built a 17-story office tower with a four-story penthouse. The penthouse was Wilson's pride and joy. The 20th floor was finished out as a game room with a private bar constructed on a grand scale of mahogany and trimmed in tufted leather and brass. The view from the penthouse was described as rivaling that of the Top of the Mark Restaurant in San Francisco. It was the scene of many invitation-only parties attended by Corpus' elite, where Wilson negotiated many of his major business deals. Most of the talk centered on Sam's parties and card games. The 21st floor contained guest rooms for out-of-town clients. After Mr. Wilson's death in 1957, Mrs. Wilson hosted society, civic, bridge and debutante functions in the penthouse. Today the Tower is said to still be inhabited by Mrs. Wilson, overseeing what goes on in the building. Many tenants have witnessed shadows and sounds while alone in their offices, especially in the early mornings or late nights. Elevators also have unusual happenings, including stopping on different floors that are not lit up, accompanied by the eerie feeling of someone else catching a ride with you.

This is one of the more powerful impressions left by a human. The main city clock has never told the correct time, on any of its faces, since a man about to be hanged cursed it. It is located about 25 miles east of San Antonio on US Highway 183.

The tower clock at the center of this town is still haunted by the spirit of Albert Howard, hanged on the gallows behind the Old County Jail on March 18, 1921. Howard became obsessed with the courthouse clock as his execution drew nearer, and he put a curse on the clock that would toll his death. Shouting that the clock would never work properly, would never again count the time against anyone, he walked up the gallows steps. He was the last man hanged in this county, and the clock has never worked properly since the day he died. Despite large sums spent for its repair, the courthouse clock has never since read the correct time, nor have all four faces of the clock agreed on the same hour.

Since Albert Howard cursed the clock prior to his hanging in 1921, the clock has never worked right.

There may have been more murders than just the priest, but we don't have anything more solid than that at the moment.

The Hamilton Hotel was originally constructed in two phases: the first in 1923 and the second from 1927-1928. The building consists of two towers and contains a total of 165 apartments, along with common and retail areas. The sounds of children running and playing can be heard.

The robes and bones of the priests were on display until a couple of years ago. Thereafter, it became an asylum for the mentally challenged. Ghost Riders

The ghost riders started haunting the Texas plains in the 1870s, when a cattleman driving his herd to market came across a new homestead blocking his normal route. It was a time of intense hatred between ranchers and farmers, and the cowboy was so angry that he stampeded his cattle right through the farmhouse, crushing everyone inside. Their screams are still heard whenever the phantom longhorns are sighted above the dusty plains. The legend inspired the popular song, "Ghost Riders in the Sky."

Port Aransas (Nueces County)

Tarpon Inn

The old hotel was built in 1886. The rooms are very small and cramped, and they haven't been restored. Our bathroom was glowing pink at about 3:00 in the morning. Last time I checked bathrooms are not supposed to glow pink. Our room was on the second floor, which was the top floor, and you could hear footsteps above us. You could also hear voices in the shower, which was this really old concrete slab thing. There were cold spots everywhere.

In 1886, Frank Stephenson, a boat pilot and assistant lighthouse keeper, built an inn at this site, using surplus lumber from Civil War barracks. He called the facility Tarpon Inn for the abundant trophy fish in the nearby Gulf of Mexico waters. The inn served as a landmark for sailors, and Port Aransas was then known as Tarpon, Texas. Tourists visiting this giant sandbar have been finding Spanish jewels and gold coins for the last century, along with encountering the ghosts of long-dead treasure seekers. The artifacts, which originate from dozens of ships sunk in the Gulf, are churned up by storms and deposited on the beaches here. A whole city has even been discovered under the sand. The town of Southern most was buried by tons of sand during the hurricane of 1875 and was unveiled by the blowing winds of another hurricane in 1961. John Singer, brother of the sewing machine tycoon, was shipwrecked here in 1847. He liked the island so much that he established a cattle ranch. During digging of the foundation for his house, he discovered a metal chest filled with eight hundred thousand dollars worth of doubloons and jewels. Just after the start of the Civil War, Singer fled the island for the Texas mainland and buried the treasure, along with his own sizable fortune, in a huge cast iron bathtub between two oak trees. When he returned after the war, the trees were gone, and he spent the rest of his life searching for the treasure. To date, it has not been found.

The Alamo

Cold spots and a feeling of melancholy can be felt throughout the fort. One hundred and eighty-nine Alamo defenders, and at least 1200 Mexican soldiers, fought and died here in San Antonio. Many died without the benefit of a proper burial, thus leaving a lot of lost souls in search of an eternal resting place. This makes San Antonio one of the most haunted cities in America.

Gruesome images are still seen around the grounds.

Alamo Quarry Theater

The theater was built over an old cement factory and rumor has it that there are bodies trapped in the foundation. These apartments are on Rittiman Road. If you're sitting at the bottom of the stairs you can see a little boy at the top of the stairs from the side of your eye.

Railroad Tracks at Shane and Villa Main

In the 1920s, a bus full of kids was struck by a train on the southwest side of town. I have been there; it is real. If you put your car in neutral, something pushes your car over the tracks. Sometimes if you look you can see small handprints. People believe this is from the small children who died in that accident.

There are railroad tracks here that are said to be haunted by some kids that were hit by a train while riding in a bus. When people come here and park their cars about ten to twelve feet away from the tracks, the ghostly kids push the car to safety.

The ghosts of children haunt this rural railroad crossing. They were victims of an accident in which a freight train hit a school bus. As a memorial, streets in the area were named after those who died. It is said that the ghosts try to push cars across the tracks to safety. An investigation led by Melissa Fuentes provided startling evidence. She parked her car on a dirt road facing the tracks and sprinkled flour all over the car. To everyone's amazement, small handprints appeared on the windshield. In 1995, a national television show sprinkled baby powder on a car parked at the tracks. In front of their cameras, a child's handprint appeared.

The San Antonio railroad tracks are haunted. Last summer I went to San Antonio and my uncle took me over there. He put the car in neutral and didn't touch the gas and the car started moving. There were handprints on the car windows. He told me that there was a bus passing a long time ago and then a train hit a school bus. All the kids died and now they haunt the railroad tracks.

The spirits of children who were killed in a bus accident at the intersection cars off the tracks. This has been documented on film. Put your car in neutral and the car will roll up the hill and over the tracks.

In an area of town known for its historic Spanish missions, there is a railroad track that was the scene of a train and bus accident. The bus was carrying children home from school when it got stuck on the tracks. The train hit it and all children were killed. Now if you put your car in neutral about 100 yards from the track, it will begin to roll uphill, over the tracks. It is said that the ghosts of the children push you over the tracks. There is also a heavy Satanic presence in this same area...it can almost be felt.

These tracks are haunted by the children killed in a 1930s fatal school bus accident. The bus reportedly stalled on the tracks and was consequently hit by a train, killing all in the bus. It is said that if you pull your car onto those tracks, the children will push your car over the tracks to safety. Baby powder placed the bumper of the endangered car is said to show the handprints of the small children.

This site was made famous by an investigation in which the spirits of children killed in a railroad accident now push disabled cars across the railroad tracks to safety. The tracks cross Villa Main Street on a small hill near the Stinson Airport just outside San Antonio.

The legend has it that a busload of kids were killed when their bus stalled on the tracks and was hit by a train. Now if you stop on the tracks and put your car in neutral, your car will roll over the tracks. The legend also states that if you powder your car you'll see the kids' fingerprints in the powder, and that the streets in the neighborhood are named after these kids. However, it is said that there is no record of any bus being hit by a train here, the streets in the neighborhood are named after the developer's kids (who are alive and well), if you don't wash your car down thoroughly first you'll see your own prints in the powder (and those of any kid who has touched your car recently), and it can appear that you are rolling uphill when you are actually rolling downhill.

This is a very popular legend that has been made famous in recent years by the press. The local police department is tired of dealing with the traffic problem caused by people testing the tracks (and the drugs and alcohol that seem to find their way there), and the local residents are tired of the traffic congestion caused by people stopping on these tracks.

Brackenridge Villa Mansion

Built in the 1840s, this mansion is said to have paranormal activity. Strange shadows are spotted from its windows. Further, there is documentation that this campus had been inhabited for nearly 7,000 years by Native Americans, who were attracted to it since the campus is the source of the San Antonio River.

When fog rolls onto the base at night, it is known that you can see a young lady walking around with a pack on her back. Cops on the base have reported that when they fall asleep on duty she will tap them on the shoulder to wake them up.

The Cadillac Bar

The ghost of an old owner is seen in the storage basement of the building. There is another ghost named Beatrice who was a former employee. She is a negative spirit because she was very unhappy and not pretty when she was alive. She turns on sinks and throws kitchen utensils. Many employees have seen both ghosts.

The alarm goes off, dishes fly off of the shelves, faucets come on, a male apparition has been seen on the back steps and a homely female apparition is seen in or near the party room.

The ghost of the previous owner and a spirit named Beatrice haunt here. The owner frequents the basement but Beatrice, who was a former employee and quite unhappy in life, turns on the sinks and tosses utensils about.

Camberly Gunter Hotel

The Camberly Gunter Hotel is haunted by the ghost of a prostitute who was murdered there by one of her tricks in the early 1800s. The room in which she was murdered was found covered in blood but her body was never found. Her portrait hangs in the lobby bar. The man who murdered her was said to have checked in to the Menger Hotel in San Antonio three blocks away, where he also disappeared without a trace.

Chinese Graveyard

Go down Zazamora and after you pass Loop 410 keep going. The road will make a slight turn to the right and on the right (it is hard to see, so go slowly) there will be a big white cross. Pull in, turn the car off along with the lights, and roll down your windows. Quickly flash your lights five times and look and listen for voices, and white apparitions around the very small graveyard.

Comanche Park/Comanche Lookout Hill

Sources say they have seen the ghosts of the men that were stationed at this fort. They also have reported that they have seen Indians there.

Many ghosts have been seen on the grounds of Comanche Park, also known as Comanche Lookout Hill. There have been sightings of old soldiers who were stationed there. And many people have also reported having seen the forms of Indians there. Another place that ties in with this area is Old Nacogdoches Road. Many people, usually driving down this road during the night hours, have claimed to see Indians and soldiers walking along side the road. There is also a creek that intersects the road that has been the host for many Indian apparition sightings.

This area is haunted by soldiers who were stationed there. Reports indicate that Native American spirits can be seen in the area as well.

Ghostly footsteps, ghostly feet and a pair of unknown apparitions spotted by a guest have also been reported here.

The Emily Morgan Hotel

Floor nine is a very active floor. Unaware that the building housed wounded soldiers during the battle of the Alamo, we stayed there in room 902. We were the only ones on the floor, yet doors opened and closed all night long. At one point the toilet seat slammed itself up and down about ten times while we were in the adjacent room. A bottle of wine slid off of the counter by itself as did the coffee pot the next morning. Upon leaving, the elevator would not take us to the floor we wanted. Once we did get moving the doors would open and shut about ten times before standing still long enough to let us out. Management had responded to earlier complaints of the same but the motor was fine.

Most of the activity can be found on the 12th floor, 7th floor and in the basement. Guests have reported apparitions and electrical equipment going haywire. The building used to be a medical facility.

Fort Sam Houston

There are several officers' quarters on this old army post that are said to be haunted. At one, you can hear the sound of a piano playing. There are stories of pipe smoke being smelled there, footsteps near the audio/visual room, rearranged books in library, the back of 1898 glass hearse being opened and other activity around it.

Unexplained pipe smoke, rearranged books, and a hearse door that opens on its own have been reported here. None of these events have an explanation, and there is no obvious reason for this building to be haunted. Perhaps it's not the building, but the artifacts it contains.

Menger Hotel

The spirit of a chambermaid who was killed there by her husband haunts this hotel.

The hotel is haunted by 38 known ghosts, including Teddy Roosevelt, a lady in blue, Sallie White who is a murdered chamber maid, Captain Richard King, and many others. My sister, who is a little psychic, had an experience here. Our family was sleeping in the new portion of the hotel, and she woke up in the early hours and saw a misty cowboy-like person standing in the room with his back turned to her. He had a blank stare on his face and just stood for several minutes before leaving. Many of Teddy Roosevelt's rough riders haunt the bar.

Old Stone Ridge Road

[See also entry for Old Stone Ridge Road in Austin. There is a Stone Ridge Road in both cities, so it is unclear where the story originates.]

If you drive down this street at night with your lights off en route to the old children's cemetery, strange things happen. Once, the locks on the doors of our car went up and down. And they weren't automatic locks. Supposedly, the Donkey Lady is responsible for the hauntings. Killed and badly mangled in an auto wreck when some friends of hers were driving down the road at night with no lights on, she haunts the woods around the area and protects the souls of the small children buried in the cemetery.

Our Lady of the Lake University

[See also entry for St. Martin Hall]

This university is said to carry ageless stories of past inhabitants who still walk the halls and campus grounds. Some of the more famous ones include the once janitor who haunts the basement of the library, the ghosts of the dorms, ghostly nuns, and a famous headless apparition who walks the halls of what is now the elementary school across the street, but was once a dorm for the university.

The myriad of ghosts at this university include a janitor in the library basement, some ghostly nuns, and a headless apparition that haunts a former dormitory across the street (now an elementary school).

Plaza Marriott

The Lady has been at this hotel for years. The hotel property includes four buildings on the historic register, and The Lady was believed to be the widow of the owner of one of these buildings. She hanged herself and her cat in what is now the exercise facility (this was formerly her home, specifically the front room or living room). Now she can be seen on the upper levels of the main hotel building usually in a long white dress or nightdress, and holding her cat, stroking its head. She has been seen in the employee corridors in the basement, and standing among the trees in the garden. Lights come on and off occasionally with no warning and no reason, and drawers at the front desk have a tendency to open by themselves.

The former owner hanged herself in what is now the exercise area. Now her apparition is seen on the upper floors, in the basement and in the garden. Lights come on and off and the front desk drawers open on their own.

Providence High School

In the 1950s there was a nun who loved the school so much that when she passed away, her sisters decided that she should be buried on the school grounds. Years later, Providence decided to build a gym over the spot where the nun was buried, forgetting she was there. Today if you walk in the gym and step in a certain area it is hollow. Also at night the nun is seen walking the halls by the many freshmen that attend the lock-in. Even after death the nun continues to watch over her beloved.

A nun is reportedly buried under the site of the gymnasium, and freshmen attending the lock-in have reported seeing her wandering the halls at night.

A beloved nun was once buried on the grounds here. The gymnasium was later erected over her resting place and it is said she has been walking the halls watching over her charges ever since.

St. Anthony Hotel

This 1909 San Antonio Hotel is haunted by a Hispanic employee named Anita, an elderly lady in a women's bathroom, a sad young woman who is in the roof ballroom, and a ghostly couple who frequently come back to a certain room to relive their honeymoon. More ghosts are there, but many are unknown. There are reports of being followed, people seeing shadowy outlines, doors opening and closing by themselves, and apparitions of two different women.

I stayed at this hotel approximately nine years ago for a conference meeting. I recall thinking it was a very elegant hotel probably visited in the early days by very wealthy people; everything seemed very old and antique. The hotel was really full and they put me in a huge room down on the end of the building; it was like a suite. I don't remember what floor but I know I took an elevator up. I rarely saw other people so I wondered if it was an overflow area. My room adjoined this other room that looked like a living room. That room gave me a strange feeling and the door lock between the two rooms didn't work well, so I immediately pushed furniture up against the door. Several times I was woken up during the night by lots of voices, like a large group returning from a night out, outside my door to the hallway, and also hotel room doors slamming like people returning to their rooms. However, every time I would get up and open my door, there wasn't a soul out there in the hallway and it was silent. The room had an eerie feeling, like something was there, but I was not overly scared. One night I was asleep on my back and was startled awake by a woman's face looking down into mine. I remember distinctly it was a woman's face, an older woman, with sort of a green glow, and I had the feeling she was looking at me out of curiosity. It went away when I jumped up. Luckily I had family members who had come up and met me that last night and stayed in my room, or I would have left the room and stayed up all night in the lobby! No one in my family experienced anything. When I checked out I told the staff I had experienced a lot of unusual stuff and they told me that a lot of people believe the hotel is haunted and that they have had a lot of experiences like voices in the halls, doors slamming, and knocking on doors. I had no knowledge of the hotel's history or that it was haunted when I went there.

Stinson Field Cemetery

The cemetery next to Stinson Municipal Airport (formerly Stinson Field) is haunted by blue lights over certain graves at night, which are in fact visible from the road when you're driving by. One of the old hangars at the airport itself is also haunted, presumably by a man who was killed while starting his plane, though it's a condemned hangar used for long-term storage only. Both of these, interestingly enough, are on the way to the ghost tracks of Shane and Villa Main roads.

The image of a giant Asian woman has been reported in this abandoned cemetery located on Mission Road near Stinson Field.

An old cemetery near Stinson Field is haunted by the ghost of a Chinese woman. The woman was seven feet tall and was teased mercilessly because of it.

In the late 1930s, she committed suicide. Now, her apparition hovers nears her grave in this abandoned graveyard. For many years, an unidentified admirer placed flowers on her grave.

This bed and breakfast is haunted by the original lady of the house and some children. The lady has been sensed in the library, and the children play on the stairs.

Footsteps that sound like a woman in high-heeled shoes have been heard on the stairs. Guests reported the sound of a toilet seat slamming every 30 minutes or so, only to find out that the toilet seat was fine. The same guests changed rooms and ended up with a ceiling fan that spun wildly then stopped (the switch was off), and a television set that jumped off the table and landed upside down on the floor. Housekeeping staff report seeing the shadow of someone pass by when no one is there.

In 1718, Milam Square was the site of a Catholic cemetery that held the bodies of many of those who died in the violence. Today, their spirits are said to rise again in response to feelings of hatred or anger in persons who walk the sidewalks where they rest. Once, the ghost was asked to leave the bathroom while a lady undressed. The amorous, though polite, specter has been sensed by both guests and residents of the house, but no one has ever identified him. The house was built in 1890 by the Hertberg family, and Purchased in 1909 by the Brooks family. It was the home of Cadet Sidney Brooks, Jr., for whom Brooks Air Force Base was named. Thomas Jefferson High School

Thomas Jefferson is said to be haunted by many spirits such as the janitor who died a tragic death in the auditorium. During his night shift, while he was fixing the clock on the upper stage level, his ladder tipped over and he fell to his death. It is said that if you put down all the chairs in the auditorium, turn off the lights and walk out that the four front center stage chairs will be pulled up once you turn the lights back on. Strange noises have been heard in the auditorium and there have been some cases where the janitor is seen sweeping the stage.

The girl in the blue dress is one of Thomas Jefferson's roaming spirits. She is said to be the spirit a little girl who roams the halls of the second floor at the school. I really don't know who the little girl is or why she haunts the school; no one really knows. There are a lot of students and teachers who have witnessed her roaming the halls at night. I have a friend who told me that she had a choir concert at the school, and it was a night concert. After the concert, my friend went upstairs to her locker. It was around 10:00 PM and there she was, the girl in the blue dress. My friend really thought nothing of it until she heard the story about her, then she realized the girl she saw was a spirit.

The haunting of the Lassos Room is one of the most popular stories Jefferson High. There are a couple of well-known spirits that have been seen and heard in the Lassos Room day and night. The Lasso Girls all showed up to the homecoming dance and they announced the winner of homecoming queen. Well, unluckily, the Lasso Girl who so badly wanted to be queen didn't win. Devastated, she ran down to the basement to the Lasso Room and hanged herself. Strange noises are also heard in the Lassos Room. At night, girls are sometimes heard laughing in the Lassos Room.

Insane Asylum

I am 17 years old and I have lived in San Antonio all my life. Just recently, I was introduced to the story of the haunted insane asylum in south San Antonio. Past the famous haunted tracks and off of Southton Road there is a dead end street. At the end of the street there is an abandoned building, and it's super creepy just to look at. There are a couple of holes in the fences that you have to crawl through to go into the building. I've been there a few times already, but I have never gone inside. Well I just went this weekend and I went inside this time. I went with a group of friends; mostly guys to protect us if anything bad were to happen. We took flashlights because it is pitch black inside. There are still old patient records on the floor and, believe it or not, there are strait jackets too. Well when we were in there we kept hearing noises, but we didn't run out, not until we heard this noise. I can't explain it but it sounded like a sort of noise you make when you're struggling to get free of something or someone. It came from a room where they did that electric shock therapy. As soon as we heard that we were out of there in the blink of an eye. People say that the spirits of the patients still haunt the building and it is stupid to go there because if those spirits were crazy when they were alive, they are going to be crazy dead too. I was really, really scared, but for sure I am going to go again sometime soon with Halloween just around the corner.

Unidentified Apartment Complex

I'm 14 years old and I used to live in this really old apartment complex. People would always tell me these really freaky stories that actually happened around there. I hated living there. At night I would just get these really weird feelings that there was another presence in the room and I would sometimes hear things that were unexplainable. There was also some sort of weird writing on the closet door. I would always see something like dark shadows run across the room. I don't know if they were ghosts or whatever. I thought maybe I was schizophrenic or something. I also have a vivid imagination. Anyways it would always just freak me out. The apartments are really old; anything could've happened in the past. Well anyways, my brother has this "sixth sense." I think his is stronger than mine. He told me one day that when he was sitting on the couch in the living room, playing with his action figures, he dropped one on the floor. While he bent down to pick it up, he turned his head to see a little girl sitting on the floor. He said she had long black hair and was wearing a white gown. She did not speak to him though. As soon as he saw her, he ran right out of the room and into mine and my sister's room where my mom was cleaning. He did not tell her. My brother was quiet for the rest of the day. Last time, my dad had gone to the restroom in the middle of the night. As he was about to go back into his bedroom he stopped and saw a smoke that was leading into the living room. It couldn't have been smoke from fire because the alarm didn't go off, and it didn't smell like smoke from fire. There was no fire. He tried waking up my mom but she was into a deep sleep. I heard them talking about it the next morning. My mom had once told me that when she lived there when she was a little girl, her sister (my aunt) would see things too. She would always see little kids play and sing "ring around the rosy" around a tree. That freaked me out. My so-called "friend" had once told me that a girl was found hanged naked on a tree (not the same one) a long time ago. But in a way I didn't believe her because she would always tell lies.

Incarnate Word High School

Madelane Hall: This hall is now filled with classrooms and such, but it used to be the dormitory for the girls who boarded and the nuns. This was back in the day when the nuns use to wear the long black dresses made of thick wool. Well one year during cheerleading tryouts, a few of the girls from the dormitory decided to try out. They were all excited the day they were going to find out who made the team, because they all thought they would make it. Unfortunately one of the girls did not make the squad, and she pretended like it did not bother her. So the others thought nothing of it and went on with normal routine. That night the girl who did not make the squad walked into the bathroom and there hanged herself from the showerhead. She was found dead the next morning by one of the nuns. To this day that bathroom is still there, same stalls, showers, and all. Sometimes when I would go in there alone or even with one of my friends we could here the crying of young girl. I would search all the stalls and the showers, but find nothing. I would only use that bathroom if I really had too. Ask any girl who attends Incarnate Word; she will tell you the story of the haunting of the Madelane Hall bathroom.

It has been said that years ago in the old auditorium, a janitor or tech was putting up a light on the top and he fell and died. To this day if you look up, the light has never been placed. Cinema 4

At Cinema 4 there is a ghost woman that watches the workers clean. She is very playful and likes to call you name. While looking down some employees have seen a little boy run up to the concession stand but when they look up no one is there. At all the theaters, everyone has seen trash cans roll up ramps, and has felt cold spots through out the buildings. The ghost only seems to mess with you if there is nothing fun going on.

Tanglewood Townhouses

Witnesses have reported things moving all by themselves, lights going on and off, things flying through midair, and temperature drops and chills once in these houses.

Hopkin's Park

In the 1990s a lady was decapitated by her boyfriend on the slide of the playground at Hopkin's Park. Those who live close to the park have reported seeing two figures walking around.

Sutton's Mott

[See also entry for Corpus Christi]

The image of grisly bodies hanging from trees, and the image of an old goat herder have been seen here. Animals such as cats and dogs don't like it here much. From I-10, follow Highway 77 for 61 miles south. Victoria is 95 miles north of Corpus Christi.

This picnic grove got its name from the cantankerous ghost who is seen there. William Sutton was a goat herder who lived in the area in the 1850s. He was murdered one Sunday while walking up the church steps in the nearby town of Goliad. Since then, his ghost has haunted this serene patch of live oak trees. Horses and dogs refuse to enter the grove, and tales of drifting phantoms and ghostly bodies hanging from trees abound. Some believe Sutton returns to protect a strongbox of gold he buried here.

Weslaco High School

It is said that several years back, a classroom of students witnessed the sudden death of their teacher in the J-Wing of the school. Today his voice can be heard every Friday during lunch, teaching in a quiet classroom. Some students claim to have even seen words appearing on the board, with no one there.

Old Catholic Hospital

The old Catholic Hospital third floor is haunted by an entity which has become known as the "blue nun." She is a nun with a blue haze surrounding her who worked the maternity ward. The hospital is now closed, but my mother had three children there. On the last child, the maternity section of the hospital was overcrowded and she had to endure most of her labor on the vacant third floor. There was one nurse on duty on that floor, but the nurse that tended my mother during her labor was a nun. No nuns worked at the hospital at this time. My aunt worked at the hospital as a nurse before it closed. She remembers working on the third floor and seeing the blue nun. Sometimes her paperwork would be in disarray, and she remembers it was always cold. I think the blue nun is just a kind soul who wants to bring comfort to those in pain. The old hospital is now vacant and is located on the corner of Orth and Hubbard near the Catholic Church. The old convent is about a half block away where the blue nun is thought to have once lived.
